The issue
A consultant member was battling for backdated pay owed to them after working more PAs (programmed activities) than contracted.
The result
A BMA employment adviser gave months of advice and support on how to negotiate with the trust, and the member was awarded more than £25,000 in backdated pay. The trust also increased the number of PAs moving forward and made adjustments to the departmental job planning process.

The issue
A doctor’s probation period was extended twice, probably because probationers only got a week’s pay if the role was suddenly terminated rather than six months if on a permanent contract.
The result
The BMA wrote to the doctor’s medical director stressing that he had achieved, and in some cases surpassed, all that had been asked of him. Following a meeting with the medical director, they secured a permanent contract.

The issue
An associate specialist’s employer sought to bring her back from sick leave on a phased return, without proper consultation. Her employer also failed to resolve the problems that led to her time off in the first place.
The result
A BMA employment adviser helped the member organise a meeting with senior staff. An action plan was agreed to tackle longstanding issues, which had previously been ignored. The doctor returned to work with the confidence that some sources of stress would be dealt with.

A group of junior doctors received a disastrous rota just two working days before it was due to begin.
The result
The BMA met with the trust’s guardian of safe working hours and other senior staff. It was revealed that the trust had ignored the need to consult over the rota, had not given the appropriate notice and had not considered the educational needs of the junior doctors. The rota was cancelled.
